Child Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility
By Talent Now
Child safety is one of the most important responsibilities in early childhood education and care.
Every educator – whether permanent, casual, relief, or volunteer – plays a role in creating safe environments where children feel protected, supported, and heard.
For casual educators in particular, working across different centres and teams can sometimes create uncertainty around procedures and reporting pathways. While every service may have its own processes, one thing always remains the same: educators are mandatory reporters and must act on concerns relating to child safety.
At Talent Now, we know that responding to child safety concerns can feel overwhelming in the moment. Uncertainty around whether something should be reported, who to speak to, what happens next, or even worrying about getting it wrong can sometimes lead to hesitation.

Child safety concerns must be acted on promptly through the appropriate reporting pathway. Early escalation and appropriate reporting are critical responsibilities for educators.
To help support educators working in ECEC environments, Talent Now has developed a practical Child Safety Decision Guide designed specifically for casual educators.
The guide provides simple, practical guidance on:
- recognising concerns
- responding appropriately
- escalating concerns through the correct pathway
- recording factual information
- understanding common mistakes to avoid
Importantly, the guide is intended to support , not replace, the host centre’s own child safety and reporting procedures.
This comes at an important time for the sector, with increasing focus on child safety, compliance, workforce accountability, and new national training requirements across early childhood education.
Strong child-safe cultures are built through awareness, confidence, and action.
Supporting educators with practical guidance is one small but important part of creating safer environments for children.
